The vase painted with women dancing stands out clearly from other items by Denis in the Museum collection. It belongs to the early works produced by the artist together with Metier in his workshop at Aniers-sur-Seine. Everything about it is unusual, the choice of theme, the compositional structure and the colour. The picture is made up of enamel in two colours, which greatly simplified the work in what was still an unfamiliar medium for the artist. The pictorial manner is based on a combination of contours with cross-hatching and stippling. Denis turns the body of the vase into an illusion of light-filled space. The figures of the dancers are ethereal and weightless.
