In the Garden. Circa 1898

In the secluded garden of a comfortable villa two ladies are chatting at a small table in the foreground. The patches of sunlight on the ground and paths are painted in Vuillard's typical decorative manner: the splashes of tempera form a pattern on the unprimed pasteboard, which was the artist's favourite material. In conception and composition the work is connected with the large Public Gardens series painted by Vuillard in the mid-1890s for the dining room in the mansion of the millionaire Alexandre Natanson. Descriptions of similar Parisian gardens can be found in the novels of Emile Zola set in the same period.
