Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri Marie Raymond de
Yvette Gilbert Singing “Linger, Longer, Loo”. 1894

One of the few works by Toulouse-Lautrec in Russian collections depicts the French singer Yvette Gilbert singing a popular English song. This drawing was used on the cover of the Paris magazine Le Rire. "The singer was intending to go to London the next day, but hearing that Toulouse-Lautrec needed to do her portrait for Le Rire, she not only agreed to pose for him, but insisted on it and sang the delightful refrain specially for him" (André Perruchot). This drawing marked the beginning of Lautrec's long collaboration with Le Rire and personal friendship with its editor, Arsène Alexandre, to whom he donated the portrait.
