Lady with a Black Glove. 1907-1908

In the summer of 1908 this recently painted picture was displayed in Russia at the Golden Fleece Salon and then entered the collection of S.A. Polyakov, publisher of the well-known Russian Symbolist journal Vesy [Scales]. Typical figures found in Van Dongen's painting at this time were the frequenters of Parisian café-chantants: dancers, singers and women of easy virtue. The artist outlines the contours with a deliberately thick line. The picture differs from other canvases in its subdued greyish-green tones.
