Henri Rousseau
Jaguar Attacking a Horse. 1910

The picture belongs to Rousseau's famous series depicting tropical plants and wild animals. He painted his exotic canvases in the Botanical Garden in Paris, where as well as strange plants there was also a zoological museum with stuffed sea beasts. These motifs, often repeated in the artist's canvases, created a kind of mysterious land where dramatic hunting scenes were enacted as in nightmares or hallucinations.
