Henri Matisse
Goldfish. 1912

The picture was painted at Matisse's studio in Issy-les-Moulineaux near Paris. In the period 1911-1915 the motif of the aquarium with fish is frequently found in the artist's works which form a kind of suite. He attains perfect harmony of composition, colour and the whole range of sensations produced by contemplating the picture. The work was purchased by Sergei Shchukin in Paris 1912 from Matisse's studio and formed part of the Pink Drawing Room ensemble in the collector's house.
