Edgar Degas
Exercising Racehorses. Circa 1880

Throughout his career Degas frequently depicted riders and horses. He would spend many hours, sketching pad in hand, at the Longchamp racecourse. The numerous drawings in his notebooks of jockeys on horseback, hands holding reins, and horses were used later to produce paintings. Degas was interested in the possibility of recording movement on canvas and in drawings.
