Jean-François Millet
Women Gathering Firewood. Early 1850-s

Hard work and peasant life dominated by the forces of nature are the main themes of Millet's oeuvre. There is no sky in this picture, which is painted from a high vantage point looking downwards. This reinforces the impression of a heavy burden and the strenuous exertion reflected in the women's figures, which are depicted with strong foreshortening.
