Giuseppe Cesari, a prominent representative of late Mannerism, known as the Cavaliere d' Arpino, was one of the key figures in Roman painting of the late 16th and early-17th-centuries. His nickname points to the fact that the artist was born in Arpino, a small town south of Rome and the title of knight of the Order of St. Michael had been conferred on him by Ludovico XIII.

A copy of the picture in the Pushkin Museum was published by Röttgen (2002).
