Pablo Picasso
Portrait of Ambroise Vollard. 1910

Ambroise Vollard was a Paris art dealer, author of a book of memoirs, publisher, authority on and collector of contemporary art. He played an important role in Picasso's life as the first art dealer who took any notice of the young Spaniard's work and maintained close business and creative contacts with the artist right up to his death. This kaleidoscope-like portrait that seems to be composed of tiny splinters from a broken mirror is a remarkable likeness of the sitter, a fact on which all his contemporaries were unanimously agreed.
