Pablo Picasso
Old Jew and a Boy (Blind Beggar with a Boy). 1903

The picture was painted in Barcelona at the home of Picasso's parents. The prototypes for the blind man were real people, beggars and and fools-in-Christ from the streets of Barcelona and the surrounding mountain settlements, as well as figures from the works of El Greco. Reflecting on the fate of helpless wisdom, personified by the weak young boy leading the blind old man, who is endowed with "spiritual sight". Picasso elongates the proportions making the figures seem particularly fragile and vulnerable.
