Early works by Rivera are rarely found in Russian collections. This one was painted during his second visit to Paris, after travelling in Europe and winning recognition in his native country, Mexico. In 1911 Rivera joined the cosmopolitan circle of the Paris School, lived in the legendary artists' colony La Ruche and frequented the cafes of Montparnasse. After familiarising himself with the various innovative artistic trends in France, Rivera succumbed to the fashion for Neo-Impressionism, with its tiny dot-like brushstrokes. Our Landscape is painted precisely this manner, using a bright, fresh gamma. Shortly afterwards, in 1913, the artist turned to Cubism.
